The causes of distracted boating

On Behalf of | May 18, 2023 | Boating Accidents

Many auto accidents are caused by distracted driving. A driver may not be giving their actions sufficient attention when they take their eyes off the road, hands off the wheel or mind off of driving. An auto accident can happen in only a few seconds of distracted driving. As a result, thousands of drivers are killed because of their actions.

Distracted driving is typically referred to when talking about vehicle accidents. However, the same term can be applied to a boating accident. Many boat owners aren’t aware of the dangers of distracted boating. But, going across the water at high speeds can be just as dangerous as driving.

Here are a few causes of distracted boating:

Texting and boating

One of the biggest causes of distracted driving is phones and the same can be said when boating. Phones are made to grab people’s attention, however, manufacturers often don’t consider the dangers this causes. Boat operators may hear their phone ring or buzz with a notification and lose their attention while driving.

Eating and drinking

Many people enjoy taking food and drink out onto the water while boating. Some boat operators may neglect their duties for a quick bite. As a result, the boat operator isn’t giving sufficient attention to their actions and could cause an accident.

Fishing

One of the main experiences of boating is fishing. Fishing can be relaxing and rewarding. But, setting a boat on an automatic course and paying attention to a fishing line may lead to a collision.

You may be a safe boat operator, but that doesn’t mean others are. If you are in an accident with another boat, then you may need to learn your legal options when seeking compensation for your injuries and losses.
